Beginning with Right Motivation
As we begin the New Year, Ven. Lama Dondrup Dorje encourages students to examine their motivation and focus on honest, authentic practice. In the Audio Teaching ‘Beginning with Right Motivation’, Ven. Lama Dondrup Dorje explains that a common sign of misplaced motivation is an obsession with mundane concerns, an obsession with emotions, with mundane opinions and mundane gossip. Such obsession paralyses the mind and prevents us from developing an authentic attitude to honour the true nature of things and cultivating dignity in doing what is right.
We must first cultivate respect for who and what we are, recognising that piece-meal respect is nothing more than a make-believe fabrication. Respect must be for all things, respecting them as what they are, developing appreciation and learning to respect the condition of cause and effect in all things.
Similar energy attracts. If we wish others to be kind to us, we must first extend kindness to others, if we wish to be respected and have supportive conditions, we must first respect the nature of things. Finding ourselves unable to act with authenticity and wisdom, we should rely on those who embody the teachings of Dharma, and follow their instruction exactly, without interpretation.
Right motivation begins with a compassionate mind, always thinking of the benefit of others. Supporting the right motivation with right understanding we should apply ourselves to practise the Dharma in every moment of the day.
