Gem of Wisdom for Daily Reflection:

The Benefits of Building And Honouring Stupas In Accordance To The Buddha

Stupa of the great terton Mingyur Dorje at the Palyul Retreat Centre in upstate New York, USA Dhamek Stupa built at the site where Shakyamuni Buddha gave his first teaching in Sarnath, India The Peace Pagoda built by Nipponzan Myohoji monks in Vienna, Austria

The benefits of involvement in the construction of a stupa and being part of the auspicious activities of paying homage to a stupa are truly immeasurable. The advantages that can be gained from such actions are reiterated by Shakyamuni Buddha in numerous sutras.

In the Rivyasapariprccha Sutra, it states:

“Great sage, I proclaim that whoever pays respect
To the past Buddhas or the living Buddha,
The merits accumulated are equal.
Because the tathagatas are defined
By their qualities of dharmakaya
And not by their forms.”

In the Saddharma Pundarika Sutra, it states:

“To the stupa of the sugatas,
Even if one offers merely
The sound of a cymbal,
A single flower,
An offering with undisciplined thought
To an image of a sugata,
One will in times behold ten million buddhas.
Whoever joins their palms in veneration before a stupa,
Be it be two palms together or one single palm,
The head bows for a moment,
Or the body bows just once,
Or prostrates with an absent mind,
To the place where the relics are placed,
Or utters the word ‘buddha’
Just once or a few times,
Will attain enlightenment.”

At one time, Shakyamuni Buddha was staying in Jetavana in Sravasti.  A brahmin youth approached the Blessed One and enquired the reasons why there is such a diversity of fate among living beings. The Buddha gave a discourse on fifty-one varieties of actions and the types of rebirths that will come about as the consequence of such actions. This includes the benefits that can be attained through devotional activities related to the stupa. This discourse is preserved in the Karmavibhanga Sutra.

These few extracts from the teaching of the Buddha should provide a glimpse of insight into the benefits that arise from the building of a stupa and the honouring of a stupa.

As explained in many sutras and tantras, the guru is the embodiment of the buddhas of the three times. During the current time of degeneration, the significance of the guru is far greater than the buddhas of the three times. To offer one’s services to please one’s root guru through one’s accomplishments, through one’s body and speech, through one’s material offerings, or through commemorating his parinirvana by building a stupa to enshrine his remains, or engaging in any virtuous activities of body, speech and mind, while remembering one’s guru and his qualities, are causes of generating immeasurable merits for the benefit of oneself and the beings of wider afield.

Whoever wish to accumulate a great store of merits should rejoice in the activities of building stupas, offering prostration, making offerings and performing circumambulation.

This teaching entitled ‘The Benefits of Building And Honouring Stupas In Accordance To The Buddha’ is presented here by Tenzin Gyalpo Drakpa Gyaltsen Dondrup Dorje as his homage to all the Buddhas of the three times in ten directions. May all beings have the karmic condition to put these advice into practice.
